Decemberists - The King Is Dead

Decemberists

The King Is Dead

The King Is Dead is a mostly-acoustic set of concise, Americana-based songs, that marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band’s wildly ambitious and acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards Of Love.

Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

The album showcases the ways in which The Decemberists sound just as glorious in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate structures that have defined their work for years.

There is also a version with a 30 minute documentary dvd.

Ryan Adams - III / IV

Ryan Adams

III / IV

Recorded during the 2007 sessions that produced Easy Tiger but shelved until 2010 for no particular reason, the double-album III/IV shares much of the relaxed, unhurried vibe of that tight 2007 LP but there is a key difference: this is a straight-up rock & roll album, the first Ryan Adams has released with the Cardinals.

Jason Collett - Pony Tricks

Jason Collett

Pony Tricks

The singer/songwriter’s new record, Pony Tricks, is a stripped-down acoustic recording that breathes new life into chosen cuts from his back catalogue.

Nine songs have been reworked for the effort, while two previously unreleased tracks — – “Pulling The Sun Down” and “My Daddy Was A Rock ‘n Roller” — are also included.

According to Collett, the release is to serve as a more accurate representation of his live shows.

Jonathan Richman - O Moon, Queen Of Night On Earth

Jonathan Richman

O Moon, Queen Of Night On Earth

O Moon, Queen of Night on Earth plays like a gesture by Richman to bring back a bit of the playfulness of his classic-era material to his current approach to record-making.

He doesn’t sound like he’s moved backward at all, but he hasn’t written a song as openly witty and self-depreciating as “My Affected Accent” in years, and if “These Bodies That Came to Cavort” is more consciously poetic than something like “Dancing at the Lesbian Bar,” the joie de vivre that informed the earlier song shines through, as do the high-spirited rhythms of “Sa Voix M’Atisse.”

The majority of the album features just Richman’s acoustic guitar and Tommy Larkins’ drumming, and they continue to be a fine match, reinforcing the musicality in one another, and they provide gentle but strong support for Richman’s songs, bringing out the drama in the melodies and the sensuality and wonder that play such a major role in his lyrics.
