Feist - Metals

Feist

Metals

Metals is the follow-up to her 2007 breakout The Reminder.

Recorded in Big Sur, California, Feist co-produced the album with longtime collaborators Chilly Gonzales and Mocky, as well as newcomer Valgeir Sigurðsson (Bjork, Bonnie “Prince” Billy) Metals will mark Feist’s celebratory return to the world stage. Wilco - The Whole Love

Wilco

The Whole Love

After seven studio albums, various collaborations and countless days on the road over the past 15 years, Wilco tried something new before starting work on The Whole Love: they took a vacation.

Staying off stage for most of the latter half of 2010 was the longest break from touring that bandleader Jeff Tweedy has had in a career stretching back more than 20 years.

Although he wasn’t out on the road much, Tweedy was working, writing so many songs that the musicians initially thought they had enough material for two new records when Wilco reconvened last fall in the Loft, the group’s Chicago recording studio.

The result is 12 stunning songs that showcase Wilco in a new light, on bold rockers, somber acoustic ballads and punchy pop songs, bookended by the propulsive 7-minute opener and a meditative 12-minute closing track

Opeth - Heritage

Opeth

Heritage

Opeth’s roots in the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian Death Metal and dark romanticism are undeniable and will never elicit apology.

But the transcendent emotional and melodic heights achieved on Heritage marks a new chapter in the storied quintet’s career. Band leader, singer, guitarist, songwriter and long-running consistent member Mikael Åkerfeldt has reshaped the pathway forward for his artistic vehicle without sacrificing the hard won spiritualism of previous endeavors.

This masterwork from the Stockholm, Sweden based virtuoso musicians is a mind-boggling dense maze of tempo shifts, off-time signatures, percussive experimentation and warped rhythms.

It is all expertly melded together by a myriad range of emotional outpouring and breezy melodic optimism which soars above the songs like a woodland spirit surveying its forest. There are multiple hints of darkness but Heritage moves the band forward into broader dimensions.

The Jayhawks - Mockingbird Time

The Jayhawks

Mockingbird Time

Their eighth album overall, and the first with the original lineup since 1995’s Tomorrow The Green Grass.

During their heyday in the first half of the 1990s, The Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant Folk-Rock of The Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, the Hippiebilly soulfulness of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the soaring harmonies of The Beach Boys.

So it’s richly ironic that their reappearance coincides with a dramatic resurgence of the musical approach they played such a central role in perpetuating—but this time around, The Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions, and it’s their own legacy that they’re advancing.

On Mockingbird Time, they’re once again pushing the envelope in songs and performances of rarefied dynamism and grace. The deluxe version contains a dvd.

Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing

Blitzen Trapper

American Goldwing

Blitzen Trapper’s third release for Sub Pop finds the band working with collaborators for the first time, opening the studio doors to an outside mixer and co-producer.

Musically, though, the band keeps things entirely within the family, brewing up a track list that harks back to the band’s 1970s country and Southern rock influences without losing sight of Blitzen Trapper’s contemporary appeal.
