Asleep On the Floodplain

After 2009’s sonically dense Luminous Night, Ben returned to the familiar environs of home recording to sculpt and assemble this batch of jams, freeing himself from the restrictions and deadlines studios might normally impose upon a song.

Thus creating a living nest in which this material could grow and breathe, the album took longer to complete but sounds effortless and bright with light. Much of Asleep On The Floodplain draws on imagery from Chasny’s youth, a time spent in Elk River.

Something Dirty isthe fourth offering from the Jean-Herv Peron and Zappi Diermaier version of Faust.

Something Dirty underscores Faust’s reputation as a never-say-die band of avant-rock provocateurs.

The sounds are basic, often repetitive, anchored by Diermaier’s primitive, tribalistic drumming (heavy with tom-toms and kick drums), and P ron’s single- and double-note bassing in the rhythm section; Johnston and Swayne are left to color the sound texturally with everything from noise and feedback to full-on chordal riffs to open, ringing drones.

Something Dirty is a powerful recording; let’s hope this version of Faust remains together awhile: their collective focus is sharp and their execution nearly flawless even at their most delightfully excessive.

In 2008, Clarke and Moyet united for a tour of the U.K., Europe, and North America.

The concerts were recorded and the result is this two-CD set.

Clarke revamped and re-recorded the backing tracks for the two Yazoo albums, so these in-concert performances have a warmer, fuller instrumental sound.

Clarke still plays and sequences the tunes live, but today’s technology has smoothed out the brittle high end that made some of Yazoo’s songs sound like video game soundtracks.

For her part, Moyet’s voice has aged well. It’s richer and deeper; her vocals are even more affecting than they were 26 years ago.
