I’m With You follows a two year hiatus for RHCP, during which time bassist Flea studied music theory and learned piano, which had a large influence on the album’s sound.

Some of the tracks were originally released as 7” vinyl singles by the Magnetic Fields; others are unreleased rarities, including three cuts from Merritt’s unfinished science fiction musical and one outtake from the 69 Love Songs sessions.
