Chickenfoot - III

Chickenfoot

III

Having established themselves in record time as one of the earth’s premier Rock bands with their Gold-certified 2009 self-titled debut.

Chickenfoot III is a superlative; rip-roaring Rock ‘n’ Roll disc that simply must be experienced from start to finish. Tough yet full of intricate textures, played by musicians at the top of their game, this is the kind of record that bands both young and old dream of making.

Opeth - Heritage

Opeth

Heritage

Opeth’s roots in the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian Death Metal and dark romanticism are undeniable and will never elicit apology.

But the transcendent emotional and melodic heights achieved on Heritage marks a new chapter in the storied quintet’s career. Band leader, singer, guitarist, songwriter and long-running consistent member Mikael Åkerfeldt has reshaped the pathway forward for his artistic vehicle without sacrificing the hard won spiritualism of previous endeavors.

This masterwork from the Stockholm, Sweden based virtuoso musicians is a mind-boggling dense maze of tempo shifts, off-time signatures, percussive experimentation and warped rhythms.

It is all expertly melded together by a myriad range of emotional outpouring and breezy melodic optimism which soars above the songs like a woodland spirit surveying its forest. There are multiple hints of darkness but Heritage moves the band forward into broader dimensions.

Gary Clark Jr. - Bright Lights

Gary Clark Jr.

Bright Lights

CD EP from the Texas-based Blues guitarist, an heir to the classic sound of Blues greats from Robert Johnson to Muddy Waters.

While most new artists are influenced by Blues/Rock legends like Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, Clark bypasses today’s greats and goes straight to the source: Blues from the ‘30s to the ‘60s.

Steve Reich

Wtc 9/11; Mallet Quartet; Dance Patterns CD

WTC 9/11 is a piece in three movements.

The first belongs to the first responders and the victims, witnesses at the instance of the attack. The second movement is for the survivors, recalling the attack almost a decade later. Reich interviewed his neighborhood residents, a Fire Department officer, and the first ambulance driver to arrive on scene. Their voices piece together a memory of that day. he last movement was inspired by a story Reich read in the newspaper about women from Stern College holding an ongoing vigil at the Medical Examiner’s office.

Low Down & Tore Up

The Jayhawks - Mockingbird Time

The Jayhawks

Mockingbird Time

Their eighth album overall, and the first with the original lineup since 1995’s Tomorrow The Green Grass.

During their heyday in the first half of the 1990s, The Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant Folk-Rock of The Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, the Hippiebilly soulfulness of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the soaring harmonies of The Beach Boys.

So it’s richly ironic that their reappearance coincides with a dramatic resurgence of the musical approach they played such a central role in perpetuating—but this time around, The Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions, and it’s their own legacy that they’re advancing.

On Mockingbird Time, they’re once again pushing the envelope in songs and performances of rarefied dynamism and grace. The deluxe version contains a dvd.

Tori Amos - Night Of Hunters

Tori Amos

Night Of Hunters

Never one to shy away from trying something new, on this, her 12th album and follow-up to 2009’s holiday effort Midwinter Graces, the flame-haired songstress takes inspiration from classical music to create a “21st century song cycle.”

Released on world-renowned German classical label Deutsche Grammophon, it sees her return to the stripped-back acoustic sound of her early career, featuring chamber instrumentation such as strings and woodwinds as she tells the story of a woman who “reinvents herself… [out of] the dying embers of a relationship.”

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Hysterical

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Hysterical

Their first new album in more than three years, Hysterical marks a major milestone in the continuing evolution of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Born out of an intensely collaborative process in which songs were constructed, dismantled, and then rebuilt anew, the album finds the band their most confident and creative, expertly expanding upon its already distinctive sound.

From the chrome-plated licks of ‘Maniac’ and the title track to the sheets of eddying synths and emotive motorik pulsebeats of Into ‘Your Alien Arms’ and ‘Ketamine and Ecstasy’, the band delivers up sonically provocative pop music that is simultaneously jubilant, mesmeric, and altogether infectious.

Hysterical reveals Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to be a wholly developed band in full command of their unique artistic gifts.
